Our Story

In 2016, Zalak launched "Z," a label infused with our creative spirit and commitment to environmental sustainability. The intention has always been to blend artistic expression and community craftsmanship with eco-friendliness. We started by making comfortable, contemporary clothing using hand-spun, hand-woven organic fabrics, natural dyes, and upcycled leftover materials, all while supporting fair trade and local artisans. From 2016 to 2019, we released two collections annually, each showcasing our dedication to sustainable fashion across various exhibitions in India. However, by 2019, we faced a turning point. The need for growth and financial sustainability pushed Z towards higher production volumes, but this clashed with our original ethos. Using fresh materials and increasing production to meet expenses didn't align with our commitment to sustainability. As the fashion industry continued to pollute the world, we decided to prioritize upcycling and zero waste.

The global pandemic in early 2020 provided a moment of reflection. Our founder and creative director, Zalak, retreated to the serene mountains of Himachal, India, where she reconnected with nature and collaborated with local communities. This period became a transformative cocoon, allowing her to realign her purpose. In 2022, Zalak moved to Auroville and delved deeper into upcycling in a dedicated studio. She also started conducting workshops to share upcycling techniques with students from different design backgrounds. Z evolved from a brand into a movement, turning discarded textiles into art, practical products, and tools for empowerment and to inspire change in local communities. As sustainability consultants, we now guide eco-fashion brands towards ethical and mindful practices. Our journey is about inspiring a future where fashion respects both artistry and the planet, illuminating a path to a brighter, more sustainable world.
